What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is a research-backed therapy that helps people heal from trauma and upsetting life experiences. Instead of only talking about the event, EMDR helps your brain reprocess the memory so it feels less painful. During a session, your therapist will guide you to briefly think about a difficult memory while using gentle back-and-forth stimulation. This may include side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or sound.
This process helps your brain store the memory in a new way. It no longer feels as overwhelming or “stuck.” Many people notice that the memory becomes easier to think about and less upsetting over time. EMDR does not erase the past, but it helps you feel more calm and in control when those memories come up. For many, it brings a deep sense of relief and emotional healing.
